This system tracks your body's movements, helps you maintain balance, and tells your brain where your head is or where it should be.

Generally speaking, your inner ear is more sensitive to movement than your brain, which is why many people feel nauseous when reading in a car.

Focusing your attention on a fixed page, rather than a slowly moving horizon, stirs up an argument between your inner ear and your eyes.

They both sent conflicting information into their brains.

If you're still listening to traffic noise, feeling the bumps in the road, and still smelling gasoline, this mix of signals can make you feel particularly nauseous.

Worse still, anxiety can worsen nausea while moving.

Therefore, don't schedule your first date on a fast-moving vehicle, such as a flight simulator or speedboat.

However, even if you find yourself sitting on a "death spiral" roller coaster and unable to gracefully exit, just relax.

Although many people feel like they're going to die when they experience nausea while moving, no one has actually died from it.

Besides relaxation, there are other ways you can take to avoid travel nausea before leaving home.

Doing so can even prevent the associated syndrome.

Dr. Linstrom and others suggest trying these common-sense preventative measures.

Reducing the intensity of your exercise and choosing the right seat is crucial to avoiding motion sickness.

Choose the most stable seat.

In a car, this means sitting in the front and looking straight ahead.

It's best to drive yourself, as drivers are less likely to experience motion sickness than passengers.

On the bus, sit in the double seat behind the front door.

When sitting in the middle of a train, plane, or ship, the swaying is the least.

**Stare at the horizon.** Look at distant objects and focus your attention on them.

When you keep looking straight ahead, your brain becomes less aware of movement.

Do not look out of the side window.

Watching telephone poles or trees whizzing by can make you feel as if you're riding in a lightweight, high-speed car making a U-turn at full speed of 200 kilometers per hour.

He said to try to alleviate your pain by reminding yourself that "the worst thing that could happen is just vomiting for a while."

Once nausea strikes, you can't pretend nothing happened.

However, you can reduce anxiety before you feel nauseous.

So think about something happy: design a new studio in your mind, make a weekend plan, and listen to some relaxing music with headphones on.

But don't shake your body like Eric Clapton did when he sang "Rose Bowl," because shaking your head will only make you feel worse.

Try ginger root. Ginger root has been around for as long as doctors have doubted its effectiveness, Dr. Maori would swear to it; in fact, he rarely encouraged patients to use other preventative methods.

He said, "If people follow the instructions for taking ginger root, they usually don't need to take any other precautions."

Dr. Mori told his patients to take 1,500 to 5,000 milligrams of ginger root 10 to 20 minutes before departure.

When the first signs of vomiting appear, take 2 to 6 capsules of ginger root.

"It doesn't matter how much you eat," he said. "It won't hurt you."

> **Trying out sports potions** If you've tried non-drug therapies without success, you might be hoping to pull out your trump card.

Dimenhydrinate (its unbranded name is Dimenhydrinate) is an over-the-counter (OTC) antihistamine that blocks the chemical signals from your inner ear to your brain that make you vomit.

Take the prescribed dose between half an hour and one hour before departure.

Like other antihistamines, it makes you feel tired.

Therefore, do not drive or operate heavy machinery after taking the medication.

Another safe option is methylphenidate hydrochloride.

It's more suitable for some people because it makes them feel less tired.

If over-the-counter medications don't relieve your nausea, try the prescription drug hyoscyamine.

Hyoscyamine is generally used in ointments because it can inhibit the central nervous system.

As a plaster, it can slowly absorb the medicine into your bloodstream over several days.

Most people apply it behind their ears, but "you can also apply it to your belly button if you wish."

"You can apply it anywhere," Dr. Linstrom said.

Dr. Linstrom told patients to apply the plaster half a day or a day before departure.

He also suggested dividing the plaster in two.

"Most people are very sensitive to it," he said.

When used at full dose, the side effects of this drug include delayed ejaculation, blurred vision, and dry lips.

However, Dr. Linstrom still preferred this ointment.

"I usually recommend it first," he said. "Other medications have a sedative side effect, while hyoscyamine does not affect mental clarity."

**Use cruise control**, especially after you've just finished a sea voyage, when you feel like you're still in motion.

For some reason, these symptoms rarely last for months or years.

Dr. Linstrom suggests that, in order to overcome these symptoms, you should do the following exercises after traveling to regain a sense of balance.

Do these exercises in bed or on a chair with armrests.

Do not do these exercises in the office or on the subway, and do not continue until you feel nauseous.

"Just a heads up, you might feel uncomfortable before you feel really comfortable," says Dr. Linstrom.

Here is the specific method: Nod your head back and forth 20 times with your eyes open, gradually increasing the speed.

Then, with your eyes open, shake your head left and right 20 times, gradually increasing the speed.

Once the dizziness subsides, close your eyes and repeat the exercise.

Stop practicing immediately if you feel unbalanced or nauseous.

If done correctly, this exercise will help your body adjust its internal balance system.
