The Kidney Meridian: A meridian that relates to your lifelong happiness.

The Foot Shaoyin Kidney Meridian originates below the little toe, runs obliquely to the sole of the foot (Yongquan), emerges below the tuberosity of the navicular bone, runs along the back of the medial malleolus, enters the heel, then ascends along the medial side of the calf, passes the posterior border of the medial thigh, connects to the spine, belongs to the kidney, connects with the bladder, emerges anteriorly (Zhongji, belonging to the Ren Meridian), runs half an inch lateral to the midline of the abdomen, and 2 inches lateral to the midline of the chest (1 inch is approximately 3.3 cm), reaching the lower border of the clavicle (Yufu).

The Kidney Meridian has two branches:

(1) The straight branch of the kidney: ascends through the liver and diaphragm, enters the lungs, runs along the throat, and reaches the sides of the root of the tongue.

(2) Lung branch: It comes out from the lung, connects with the heart, flows into the chest, and connects with the Pericardium Meridian of Hand Jueyin.

As can be seen from the pathway of the Kidney Meridian, although it has only 27 acupoints, it is connected to the kidneys, bladder, liver, lungs, heart, and other organs, making it the meridian with the most connections to the body's internal organs. This makes its function exceptional.

The kidneys are responsible for storing essence, a crucial function of the body. This essence is the fundamental substance that sustains human life. The kidneys store essence in two ways: prenatal and postnatal. Prenatal essence is inherited from the parents and forms the primordial substance that constitutes the embryo. Postnatal essence is the refined substance derived from food and water after birth, as well as from the physiological activities of the internal organs; it is also known as the essence of the internal organs. Prenatal essence is fundamental to human growth and development, while postnatal essence is the material basis for maintaining life. Therefore, the sufficiency of kidney essence is closely related to a person's life cycle, including birth, aging, illness, and death.

If there is a problem with the kidney meridian, the body will usually show symptoms such as dry mouth, hot tongue, sore throat, irritability, being easily startled, chest pain, weakness or muscle atrophy and numbness in the waist, spine and lower limbs, and hot and painful feet.

To address these issues, we can alleviate them by stimulating the Kidney Meridian. One method is to stimulate along the Kidney Meridian's pathway, as it connects to many internal organs. Stimulating the Kidney Meridian can clear imbalances in the meridians and regulate and soothe the connected internal organs. Another method is to stimulate key acupoints on the Kidney Meridian, such as Yongquan (KI1) and Taixi (KI3).

From 5 PM to 7 PM daily, also known as the You hour (5-7 PM), is the peak time for the Kidney Meridian, when its Qi and blood are at their strongest. Therefore, massaging the Kidney Meridian during this time is most effective. Taking traditional Chinese medicine at this time is also more beneficial. Additionally, if someone in your family frequently experiences a low-grade fever during this period, it may indicate a significant depletion of Kidney Qi, requiring close attention. This condition is more common in adolescent boys and newlyweds. Adolescent boys, experiencing the onset of puberty, may masturbate more frequently, and newlyweds often engage in unrestrained sexual activity; both of these factors excessively deplete Kidney essence and damage vital energy.

In short, for the sake of our lifelong happiness, we must understand and make good use of the Kidney Meridian. When the Kidney Essence is sufficient, the Kidneys will become strong, and the whole person will be full of creativity, and many problems will be easily solved.

Three famous acupoints to warm and tonify kidney yang

Kidney Yang deficiency is a condition that can easily occur in men of all ages. Although it's not a serious illness, if left untreated, it can easily lead to serious diseases of the stomach, lungs, and kidneys, such as nephritis, nephroptosis, cystitis, diabetes, and erectile dysfunction. Therefore, we must not take it lightly; if the above symptoms appear, we should seek treatment promptly.

Besides taking medicine, using medication to regulate acupoints is also a good method.

Hegu (LI4) is an important acupoint for health maintenance. Massaging both sides of this acupoint for 3 minutes each before breakfast and dinner can effectively improve the function of Wei Yang (defensive Qi). Moxibustion is suitable for Hegu in winter, late autumn, and the transition from summer to autumn, while massage is suitable in spring and summer. When massaging, press towards the little finger until you feel a slight soreness and distension. When performing moxibustion, hold the moxa stick about two finger-widths away from the acupoint.

Zusanli is an important acupoint on the Stomach Meridian and is also known as the Longevity Acupoint. It is mainly used to treat abdominal diseases. Massaging or moxibustion on both sides of Zusanli for 3 minutes each day can nourish the stomach, kidneys, and lungs. It should be used in conjunction with Hegu.

The Yuji acupoint is located on the Lung Meridian of Hand-Taiyang. Pinch and rub or apply moxibustion to the Yuji acupoints of both hands for 3 minutes each day to protect the lungs. It is essential to use this acupoint in conjunction with Hegu and Zusanli.
