The Growth and Transformation of Boys: Physiology of the Kidney Qi Cycle, Health Knowledge on Bedwetting and Spermatorrhea

Boys develop later than girls, with a life cycle of approximately eight years. According to the *Huangdi Neijing* (Yellow Emperor's Inner Classic), "At eight years old, a boy's kidney qi is abundant, his hair grows long, and his teeth change." During this stage, a boy's hair begins to thicken, and his baby teeth gradually fall out, which is a sign that his kidney qi is beginning to flourish. To lay a strong foundation for a boy's health, parents should supplement his kidney qi appropriately during his early years, such as by feeding him more roasted nuts or walnuts boiled in salt water. It is particularly important to note that excessive consumption of sweets can severely damage kidney qi; boys with poor kidney function should strictly limit their sugar intake.

If a boy is still bedwetting at age 8 (more than once a month), it is often a sign of kidney deficiency. Traditional Chinese medicine believes that bedwetting is related to dysfunction of the lungs, spleen, and kidneys, and patients often have characteristics such as thinness and congenital deficiency. Treatment should follow the principle of nourishing the kidneys and replenishing vital energy. A simple home remedy is to apply moxibustion to the Guanyuan and Shenshu acupoints for 15 minutes each, until the skin is slightly red and warm. In addition, massaging the Baihui, Sanyinjiao, and Zusanli acupoints with one finger can not only relieve bedwetting but also enhance the child's overall constitution.

Around the age of 16, with the onset of "Tian Gui" (a concept in Traditional Chinese Medicine), boys experience their first nocturnal emission, a significant sign of sexual maturity. The sperm continuously produced by the testes is automatically released after filling the epididymis and vas deferens; this is a spontaneous, involuntary, and normal physiological reflex, not subject to volitional control. Parents should provide boys with scientific sex education, correcting misconceptions that it is "vulgar" or "pathological," cultivating a healthy sexual psychology, and preventing unnecessary psychological burdens caused by fear and guilt.

A prominent Adam's apple is another significant sexual characteristic of boys entering puberty. Influenced by male hormones, the thyroid cartilage of boys rapidly enlarges and protrudes forward, widening the larynx and deepening the voice. It is worth noting that men who engage in excessive physical exercise or frequent masturbation during puberty may not have a prominent Adam's apple due to the significant depletion of sex hormones; however, this usually does not affect their fertility or the masculinizing characteristics of their voice.

In the long run, the strength of a boy's sperm directly affects his future fertility. Traditional Chinese medicine believes that kidney essence relies on the spleen's transformation of food essence for nourishment. Dysfunction of the spleen and stomach can lead to nutritional deficiencies in the external genitalia, causing low libido and even infertility. Modern boys often consume fatty and spicy foods, overburdening their spleen and stomach, resulting in insufficient production of qi and blood, and declining sperm quality. Therefore, adolescent boys should focus on a balanced diet, consuming more black foods such as black sesame seeds and black rice to replenish their innate essence, in addition to the benefits of bitter flavors for kidney health. Through these subtle nurturing steps, boys can successfully transform into robust and masculine men.
